Fashion Must-Have: The Jumpsuit

We have all the details on Abby’s one-piece, plus the simple trick that makes jumpsuits way more flattering.
If we learned anything from tonight’s episode of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, it’s that every woman should own a jumpsuit and that we’ve been doing travel style all wrong. While sweats and sneakers may be more comfortable, Abby proved that nothing looks sleeker than a white cutout one-piece while flying to New York (though, it may not be the most practical color choice when dealing with beverages mid-air).
Costume Designer Cynthia Summers gave us all the details on both of Abby’s jumpsuits from tonight’s episode, plus what to look for when shopping for your own.
“The white jumpsuit is by A.L.C., ” says Summers. “It’s perfect for traveling and heading into a work situation…it says ‘slacks’ with more sex appeal. We pared this one with a black brocade blazer by Balmain, nude stilettos by Manolo Blahnik, and added a pop of color with her red Hermes tote.
“Her second jumpsuit in this episode is by Roland Mouret. Classic black and white with incredible back detail. Classic and sexy for evening. We paired black suede stilettos by Dior and a vintage white leather envelope clutch by Michael Kors.”
Summers‘ biggest tip for pulling off a jumpsuit? Proportion. “You want to take extra care in the body length or the girth of a jumpsuit. Everyone has a specific length or body proportion to their torso, so not every jumpsuit is going to fit the same. There are so many great seamstresses and/or tailor shops, and really the only way to get the perfect fit, is getting a piece altered to your own unique and special physique.”
Lisa Edelstein also talks about finding a flattering size. “I love a jumpsuit as long as it doesn’t take your vagina for a walk, which is something that is challenging when it comes to a one-piece,” she told Bravotv.com.
Summers’ solution? “The best advice I can give, as I do with any garment, is make provisions in the fit. Going a little larger is better than ‘this is a little snug, but I’m going to lose a few pounds so I’ll get this anyway.’
